Editing

During my student years, I did editorial work as a student assistant to Prof. Jacques T.A.G.M. van Ruiten and Prof. George H. van Kooten. This experience forms the basis for my current work as a book review editor of Brill’s Journal for the Study of Judaism. Because of my accuracy, eye for detail, patience, and systematic approach, editing is right up my alley. At present, I also co-edit proceedings volumes of conferences and symposia I co-organized.

Co-Book Review Editor of the Journal for the Study of Judaism

Since September 2019, I am again involved with Brill’s Journal for the Study of Judaism. Together with Dr. Lieve Teugels, I manage the book review section of this journal. I am mainly responsible for the acquisition part of the process. I also maintain contact with reviewers and publishers and keep the administration of the editorial process. Occasionally, I edit submitted reviews. For a brief period, I also served as a copy editor of the articles published in the Journal for the Study of Judaism.

Co-Editor of the Volume Parables and Fables in the Graeco-Roman World

As the proceedings of our symposium “Parables and Fables in the Graeco-Roman World” (March 13, 2018), Martijn Stoutjesdijk, Jonathan Pater and I published the edited volume Overcoming Dichotomies: Parables, Fables, and Similes in the Graeco-Roman World with Mohr Siebeck in 2022. Bringing together contributions on a range of Graeco-Roman, Jewish, and Christian sources, this volume aims to broaden our understanding of the related genres of parables, fables, and similes in the Graeco-Roman world. The contributions highlight the fluid boundaries between these genres and their shared use of themes and motifs, but also demonstrate how the adoption and adaption of these genres in different literary works give expression to the distinct identities of their composers. Together with Martijn Stoutjesdijk, I wrote the introduction to the volume.

Assistance to the Book Review Editor of the Journal for the Study of Judaism

From January 2009 to August 2012, I assisted Prof. Jacques T.A.G.M. Ruiten in his capacity as book review editor of Brill’s Journal for the Study of Judaism. I was responsible for the acquisition of book review copies, maintained contact with reviewers and publishers, and kept the administration of the editorial process. At the end, I also copy edited reviews.

Style Redaction of the volume Abraham, the Nations, and the Hagarites

As a student-assistant to Prof. Dr. George H. van Kooten and Prof. Dr. Jacques T.A.G.M. van Ruiten in the period of 2009-2013, I assisted with several publications, mainly with Brill Publishers in Leiden. I edited two edited volumes and several articles on style and compiled indices of sources for several books. Particularly, the volume edited by Martin Goodman, George H. van Kooten, and Jacques T.A.G.M. van Ruiten, Abraham, the Nations, and the Hagarites: Jewish, Christian, and Islamic Perspectives on Kinship with Abraham (Themes in Biblical Narrative 13; Leiden en Boston: Brill, 2010) was a milestone. For this voluminous volume (577 pp.), I did both the style editing and compiled the index of sources. In gratitude for my work, my “editorial assistance” is mentioned on the title page.
